Description
The simmering hostilities Arabs and Israelis erupted into open conflict on October 6,1973, in what has become to be known as the Yom Kippur War, the fifth clash between those antagonists in less than twenty years. Egyptian forces crossed the Suez Canal and breached the Bar lev Line while Syrian troops and a thousand tanks poured across the 1967 cease-fire line into the Golan Plateau. The Israelis, caught by surprise, scrambled to counterattack. Their crack "huntersquadrons" took to the air angry hornets, only to run into the Arab air defense barrier of anti-aircraft guns and radar-controlled, surface-to-air guided missiles, with disastrous results. This was a war of electronics, of guided missiles pitted against counter-measure designed to jam and divert their guided system. But it was also a war of traditional tanks and guns and infantry that culminate in the largest armored battle since World II involving over two thousand tanks. It was a war incredible material destruction. In less than three weeks more than 500 aircraft and 2500 tanks were destroyed. The United States stripped its European NATO stockpiles and mounted an airlift across the Atlantic to supply Israel, while the Soviets airlifted supplies and equipment to the Arabs and provided technical advisors. Edgar O'ballance has combined meticulous research with an extensive and intimate knowledge of the Middle East in this unbiased and wide-ranging accounting. The war ended, as it had begun, in a stalemate ? no victor, no vanquished ? but its lessons have since promoted reappraisals of the strategies of waging war in modern times.

Author Biography
EDGAR O'BALLANCE. author, journalist, defence commentator and lecture, is an indefatigable researcher, combining official records and documents with personal interviews and on-the-spot briefings with the participants. He served in the British Army from 1935 to 1948 and has lectured at Staff Colleges in the United Kingdom, Egypt, Israel, France, and at several universities. A prolific writer, specializing in international relations and defiance problems, O'Ballance has written fifteen books and innumerable articles for military journals and newspapers. He lives in Derbyshire.
